Rammstein had the grand idea to marry crunchy, retro, beyond- cheese heavy metal riffs to bland electro-house keyboard sounds, all while adding unbearably pseduo- demonic, booming Laibach-ish vocals sung mostly in German. It's cartoon music, and they are a cartoon band. The cover images are of six young male faces covered in pancake makeup (belly skelly!), and kitchen utensils menacingly(?) wrapped around their faces: I can't believe this is not a joke, some testosterone- driven dorky kids making fun of industrial dance kultur and black metal cliches.

The German press has worried that this music is fascist. Certainly the sound might be totaletarian in its context, but it's too bland to be more than a simulation of rage, at best. "You/ you hate/ you hate me" goes the English version of "Du Hast," and I want to oblige the singer. It's the Disney syndrome applied to a Nine- Inch- Nails- rocks- out- with- Helmet aesthetic: when art becomes so transparently simulated and full of empty gesture, it never expresses anything at all. I never thought I'd hear music that made Marilyn Manson seem substantive.
